From our CEO
Evolving Scope 3 emissions
When it comes to Scope 3
emissions — those not produced by
CSAA or resulting from activities from
assets owned or controlled by CSAA,
but that we are indirectly responsible
for, up and down our value chain — our
calculations have been evolving over
the years. We began by calculating
emissions from business travel and
employee commutes. The shift to
the vast majority of CSAA employees
working from home helped decrease
our employee commute emissions by
approximately 97% and in-office
energy use emissions by approximately
70% from baseline. In 2022, we
added work-from-home emissions
as our organization switched to a
primarily remote workforce. In 2023,
we expanded even further to include
paper emissions from across
the organization.
With the reduction in real estate and
our fleet, we have achieved our goals,
but in 2024 we saw an increase in both
business travel and work-from-home
emissions. We continue to look for

opportunities to decarbonize across
all scopes and develop new programs
to support more sustainable business
travel and home offices.
Additional milestones in this
area include:
• Sustainability tips and best practice
education were provided to
administrators coordinating division
events and executive travel.
• We updated our travel policies that
support reducing emissions (direct
flights/carpool/green hotels).
• Our Meetings Team Leader completed
the Sustainable Event Professional
Certificate (SEPC) program from the
Events Industry Council (EIC).
• We rolled out a travel booking tool
update that allows travelers to see
their emissions impact when building their business travel itinerary.
• We updated large conference registration sites to include sustainability
tips and carpool finder options.
